The 2021 Barbaresco Roncaglie is a terrific new release from Poderi Colla and a worthy follow-up to the sublime 2020. It is perhaps not quite as overtly expressive as its older sibling, yet I see gorgeous depth and layers of dynamic energy that are waiting to unfold. Macerated red cherry, blood orange, spice, menthol and dried flowers all race across the palate. There's a level of purity here that is just beguiling.

Poderi Colla is one of Piedmont’s under-the-radar jewel estates. The Colla family farms an extensive range of vineyards, including core holdings in Barbaresco and Barolo. In recent years, the Collas have introduced a Riserva series. Those wines can be quite good, but I often prefer the non-Riservas for their greater translucence. Farming and winemaking remain very much rooted in the tenets of classicism. Readers looking for traditionally made wines that are still pretty affordable will want to spend some time checking out this range.
