From: 2021 Barolo: Changing Times, Changing Wines (Jan 2025)
The 2021 Barolo del Comune di La Morra is terrific. Red-toned fruit, crushed flowers, chalk and mint are very nicely delineated. Tannins are a bit edgy and nervy for a wine from La Morra, but perhaps this will come together with time. This is far from an easygoing wine. 2025 - 2033

Alberto Alessandria turned out a terrific set of 2021s. The wines are deep, layered and super-refined, as Barolos from these sites should be. Readers will note the addition of a new Riserva from Capalot. That wine comes from the same vinification as the straight Capalot, but it sees extended aging in an 850-liter Clayver, the ceramic vessel producers around the world have begun experimenting with. The 2021s were harvested from October 8 to 12. They spent 30 days on the skins (with no submerged cap maceration) and daily pumpovers. Malolactic fermentation was done in tank. The wines were racked into oak in spring, where they spent 24 months. More than anything else, these Barolos impress for their finesse and an increasing sense of purity that is compelling. I first visited this address in La Morra's Santa Maria district more than 20 years ago. It's great to see the family doing so well.
