Nervi eller rettere Nervi Conterno som det hedder efter Roberto Conternos køb af vingården i 2018 beliggende i det lille vinområde Gattinara i det nordlige Piemonte. Vinen er lavet på nebbiolo (lokalt betegnes spanna). Det er flotte syreholdige vine der holder et ganske burgundisk udtryk.

The 2021 Gattinara Vigna Valferana is absolutely gorgeous. A wine of energy, tension and cut, the 2021 is immediately captivating. Crushed rocks, iron, slate, white pepper and mint all race across the palate. The persistent, intensely saline finish is a thing of beauty. The Valferana is a Gattinara for readers who enjoy reds built on energy and tension. This is so expressive, even in the early going. 2027 - 2046

Roberto Conterno bought Nervi in 2018 and has since raised the bar considerably. Given Conterno’s short history at Nervi, fully understanding the wines and how they develop after release is going to require some time. The first signs are extremely positive. I can report that a recent bottle of the 2018 Gattinara Vigna Valferana, a wine I loved on release, is still years from being at its best. The 2020 straight Gattinara is also quite young. The 2021s I tasted on my most recent visit might not hit the peaks of the very best years, but they aren’t too far off. It is quite possible the 2021s will have more to say in a few years’ time.
